Mining tenement data & monitoring in Northern Territory

The Northern Territory administers mineral titles under the Mineral Titles Act 2010, with the STRIKE web map providing open access to tenure and geoscience. Large exploration licences and a frontier land position make monitoring especially valuable here.

How mineral tenure works in the Northern Territory

The Mineral Titles Act 2010 governs exploration and mining in the NT. A mineral exploration licence gives the holder the right to occupy the title area, the exclusive right to explore for minerals, and the exclusive right to apply for a mineral lease over all or part of that area. Licences cover between 4 and 250 blocks and can be granted for up to six years, with renewals available.

Applicants must notify affected landowners within 14 days of lodging, and access to Aboriginal land and other tenure types carries specific processes. As elsewhere, ground must be available before an application can be made.

Where to find NT tenure data

STRIKE is the NT's interactive map for mineral and energy tenure and geoscience. You can view granted and pending titles, query their details, download datasets, and combine tenure with mineral occurrences, drillholes and geochemistry to assess an area's prospectivity. GEMIS provides the underlying open-file reports and geoscientific records.

Together, STRIKE and GEMIS let you establish both the legal status of ground and what is already known about it - the two questions that determine whether an opportunity is worth pursuing.

Monitoring expiries and open ground

NT exploration licences run for up to six years with renewals, and the Territory's large licence footprints mean that when tenure changes, sizeable blocks can reopen at once. Licences expire, are surrendered or move into retention, and each transition can free up ground.

Because the Territory is vast and title areas are large, monitoring is less about volume of tenements and more about not missing significant, infrequent events. Watching expiries and surrenders on your target belts is the difference between reacting and being reacted to.

What this means for exploration teams

In the NT, opportunities can be large but sparse, and land access adds complexity that rewards early awareness. Knowing that a major licence is approaching expiry - and understanding the geology and access considerations before it opens - is a decisive advantage.

Xplore360 Land Monitoring is built to track NT tenure continuously, score newly available ground, and assemble briefs that fold in the geoscience already published in STRIKE and GEMIS.
